Venipuncture Training

One of the most crucial requirements of a phlebotomist is to obtain adequate venipuncture training. Well, before I proceed on, let me quickly explain what venepuncture means. Most of us must have one time or the other visited our private physician or a doctor in the community hospital for some treatment of an ailment or just for a medical check-up after which the doctor possibly would have prescribed a blood test to diagnose the illness. The technique of retrieving blood from the body for the purpose of analysis in the medical laboratory is widely known as phlebotomy and the prestigious personality who is in charge of extracting blood from the body is the phlebotomist.

Retrieving blood from a donor or patient can be done in three different methods. It could be done through the arteries, through the veins and can also be done through the capillaries. The method of extracting blood through the veins of a donor or patient is known as venipuncture. A phlebotomist, who is saddled with the responsibility of drawing out blood from patients and donors for medical laboratory analysis must have adequate venipuncture training and expertise in order to be able to play his role effectively.

Venipuncture training involves learning about the different methods of puncture, the manner of handling the equipment used and above all, an ample idea of the human anatomy. This is because locating veins and identifying the right vein to extract blood from is not an easy task and it requires expertise. A phlebotomist is expected to interact with patients during the process of retrieving blood for analysis. He should be weary of the pain being experienced by the patient and so should act with patience and dexterity in a way that he would not aggravate the pains of the patient. Also, he must learn how to comprehend the reactions of the patients while extracting blood and should ensure that he acts in a skilful manner so as not to hurt the patient. These and other important safety measures that are crucial for a phlebotomist to know will be taught and explained in the venipuncture training classes.

Also in phlebotomy training, it is pertinent that a phlebotomist learns more about the human anatomy, the different veins in the body, their interactions with one another and also with the body and how they are located for extracting blood for further analysis. Venipuncture training is not limited to the aforementioned; rather, it also involves teaching the potential phlebotomists various procedures and processes that must be followed, the safety measures that must be taken into consideration and the professional approach to the job that include cleanliness and hygienic means of carrying out his responsibilities

Another thing a prospective student of phlebotomy must understand is that theoretical aspects of training will not do it all. You must spend several hours in the hospitals during practical venipuncture training classes, watching the professionals perform their job and perform a lot of practice tasks. The more practical you are, the more precise you’ll be, and the more confident you’ll be in executing your job. Meanwhile, the level of your confidence and the professional approach you adopt while performing your duties determines your expertise.

Outstanding knowledge about the job with practical approach with professionalism is an essential tool to obtain a certification in venipuncture training.

Hello Max, as with any test, it is as hard as you make it.. If you pay attention in class, study, and apply yourself you should be fine.
